Gandhigiri :: Relevance in today’s world

Gandhigiri … a word almost everyone is familiar with today not because of their staunch belief in the gandhian principles but more because people like Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi were behind its formulation …. Never would Mahatma Gandhi have thought that the principles he established, followed and advocated his entire life would be summed up in a single word like “Gandhigiri” that owes its origination from a word like Dadagiri ….. Yes i do agree that the times have changed but no one would have ever thought in the wildest stretch of imagination that the Gandhian principles and values, that formed the basis of our independence, would require such a medium to flow and such a name for recognition ….

I am not the age that i can say that i have seen many things come and go but i am definitely the age that i can see, understand and then accept or discard that exists ….. and my instincts, based on my personal experiences, compell me to strongly disapprove the relevance of Gandhigiri in the era that we are living in-the 21 century,an era where occurence of neuclear war and an SRK flip going flop have equal probability.

I was very lucky to witness a demonstration of the politicians of the opposition party where each one of them had a flower in hand a most of them had banners that extended get well soon messages for the ruling party …. It was a protest against the policies of the government in the state….It was a very soothing experience witnessing such a peaceful protest bringing back the memories of the protests that Mahatma Gandhi used to lead … It,for once, inculcated in me a sense of belief towards the concept of Gandhigiri(afterall this protest was strongly inspired by our Munna Bhai’s Gandhigiri) but my belief was a fantasy with a very short life …. The very next day one of the leading protestors made the headlines by being actively being involved in cases of bribery and frogery and evidences in the form of sting operation videos were being flashed on the news channels thrice every ten minutes….If i could have had a word with him the only thing i would have told him was-Switch proffession…you are better off as an actor …. because believe me on the day of protest he was looking like mahatma gandhi reincarnated !!!!!

“An eye for an eye” does make the world blind but “nothing for an eye” would also make half the world blind …. Today if someone slaps you on one of your cheeks and by any chance, following Gandhigiri, you made the mistake of lending him your other cheek, believe me buddy, your other cheek is going to be red by the end of the next second(same happened with Munna Bhai … remember ??? )….

It may sound bitter but the fact is the concept of Gandhigiri is completely irrelevant in the age that we are living in…If you think that you can melt the hearts of terrorists like Osama Bin Laden by handing them a bunch of roses then you need to pinch yourself and tell yourself immediately-wake up Sid !!!! I stand no doubt on the strength of Gandhian principles but i do stand a doubt on their relevance …..

Hats off to the team of Munna Bhai for making a sincere attempt to reimbibe the Gandhian principles but the world of today needs some strong modifications and the only man who holds the right is no more with us-Mahatma Gandhi….. The society which we have today is no where close to the one for which the great freedom fighter laid these principles so it’s the structure of the society that needs to be changed first…..So in a nutshell,if you really feel the issues of today can be sorted out by Gandhian principles then boy ——> you are a MAMU !!!!

Dadagiri

And I thought we were living in a democracy . Whatever Mr. Shahrukh Khan said regarding the inclusion of Pakistani players in IPL might have appealed to some section and might not have to others . But the way Shiv Sena reacted to this was not at all called for . They didn’t like his speech ,  fair enough . But resorting to violence to bring down someone and forcing him to apologize , just to prove yourself right , is not justified by any means .

The point is that Shiv Sena doesn’t want to miss any opportunity to bring itself in the news and wave its “Maharashtra is for Marathi” banner . I still can’t find any solid reason behind interpreting Sachin’s words “I am first an Indian , and then a Marathi” to declare that he is not a true Marathi . Sachin Tendulkar is a national icon . And targeting a national icon guarantees a lot of media coverage , which is what Shiv Sena is after for .

What would happen if a party like Shiv Sena springs up in every state . Won’t our country be divided into a number of small parts . Then everyone will be confined to their own states and the entire country will be divided on the basis of caste , creed and religion . Shiv Sena is making sure that no stone is left unturned in its efforts to undo the development India has achieved in last six decades .

When someone justifies national integrity by saying that soldiers from all across the country fought for the people during the Taj incident , they interpret it as a disrespect to the Marathi martyrs . When Rahul Gandhi uses an ATM in Mumbai , they say that for people from Delhi , Mumbai is nothing more than a money drawing machine .

Shiv Sena has seriously lost it . The loss in elections have affected them seriously . They think that they own the State and they can regulate all its affairs . And the thing that is surprising is that they are doing it  . They are regulating its affairs , doing whatever they feel like , and the State Government is not doing a bit to prevent it . Government is doing what it knows the  best , and that is , giving assurances and making promises .  Something is seriously wrong and whatever it might be , it  needs to be changed as soon as possible .

The Elephant and the Dragon

The tides are changing . Its been long time since few powerful countries like USA and Russia decided the world order . Its high time that the elephant and the dragon enter the scene now and play a major role in reshaping the world . The way this elephant ( India ) and the dragon ( China ) is developing now , it is only a matter of time before it emerges as a world power and will be an important factor in deciding the new outlook of the world .

According to a survey by Australian Government , this is the graph of how the shares of Australian exports have fared in India , China and other North Asian countries from 1993-2003 . While the graph declined in North Asia , it showed a significant increase in China and India , which is the place where the entire world market has its gaze fixed upon .

Though China appears to be a step ahead of India , still India’s track record of inclusive growth looks better than that of China’s , the credit of which goes to India being a democratic . “” The Elephant and the Dragon : The Rise of India and China and what it meant for all of us “” by Robyn Meredith is essentially a guide which helps you to understand how India and China are reshaping the world. It also highlights the fact that how unlike China , India has not turned a blind eye towards the marginal section of the society .

China’s focus is all set on development right now , which is coming at a high cost of human welfare .  In the name of development, communist China displaced millions of peasants and deprived them of their livelihood . We are lucky to be living in a democratic India rather than a communist China , where atleast the people are not deprived of their rights in the name of development .

Robyn Meredith further points out the fact that how China is converting itself into a commercial juggernaut that is inspiring a feeling of fear accompanied with envy in hearts of workers and CEO’s worldwide and how it is an active participant in contributing to environmental pollution . On the other hand , India is seen to conquer the back office work of the world , since the number of students that graduate from India universities are far more compared to other nations .

China and India are the places to watch . World market is expanding and so is India and China’s economy . Its all set to take up the power to shape the new world order .
